1 Corinthians 13 vs 4 - 8:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
Very very powerful right!
I just love that this message is really self explanatory. Love is all things mentioned above and love is also not all the things mentioned above.
For example:
Love is patient.
We are being taught to be patient;
Love is kind.
You can't love people without being kind to them;
Love does not envy and it has no jealousy.
If you are jealous of others or if somebody has something better than you or if someone receives some kind of victory and you're not happy for them then that's not love;
Love does not boast.
You can't go around boasting thinking you're better than everyone else;
Love is not proud.
Pride means a lot of things. Someone who's proud is someone who cannot be told anything by anybody. They always think that they're right, they always want to think everyone is wrong. They are the only one who know everything. They cannot be corrected, if you try to correct them they get angry at you;
Love does not dishonor others.
This means we should do the opposite by honouring others. Honour others, honour your parents, honour elders in your community, honour your colleagues, honour your boss. You can't just go around being rude to people. Honouring just means respect, respect people. Be respectful and when you do that that's love.
Love does not get easily angered.
If you're somebody who is just easily angered then you do not have love in you. You should have a little patience, you can't be annoyed by every little thing that people say or do.
Love does not keep a record of wrongs.
If you find yourself writing down the people that have wronged you or what they have done or everything wrong that your husband does and you keep it to heart, you keep a record of wrongs. There is no love there.
Love trusts, love hopes, love perseveres. I like the last part where it says love never fails. Everything else can fail, even those important things that we know in the Bible, e.g prophecies, tongues, knowledge, wisdom and understanding. Everything else is going to pass away or will fail but love never fails.
So let's never forget that. I encourage you to go and read the passage by yourself and meditate on it. Evaluate yourself, "Are you really walking in love or it's all about you?", because there's a part in our passage that says "Love is not self seeking, it's not selfish". Is it all about you? Do you consider other people before you say something or is it's all about you and whether it pleases you? And if it's ok with you you're just fine by it. Love is not that.
So think about it, "Do you really love your husband or you just tolerate him, do you really love others, do you really love God?", I know we spoke about really loving God in our last message. God has so many promises for those who love Him but if we have not yet seen those promises we should be asking ourselves, “does that mean I dont love God?". We really have to evaluate ourselves and change the way we do things and start loving God.
Love never fails. And my message to you is that I love you. I love you guys and I want you to know that.
Prayer:
Father in the name of Jesus. We thank you for this message.
Teach us how to love others like you love us. Teach us not just to talk about love but to do acts of love. Teach us to be kind, to be patient, to honour others and to love the truth and everything else that is being said in this passage.
We thank you father for you unconditional love for us. We thank you for giving us your one and only son Jesus Christ. We thank you because He came to give us salvation and He came to give us a life and a life more abundantly. We bless your holy name. In Jesus name I pray. Amen
