Genesis 37 vs 5 - 10
Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”
8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.
9 Then he had another dream,and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”
Many of us have heard about the story of Joseph since childhood right?, but have you ever really taken a moment to analyse what all this meant. This story here confirms that every one of us was created for a destiny, for a purpose. We have dreams within us that were put there by God.
I heard one man of God saying every human being on earth was created to solve a certain problem. Now here lies the real question, "do you know what you were created for?". What problem were you created to solve, the problem that no one else can solve, what are you dreaming of?. God gives us all of us dreams and it's up to us to pay attention. Pray to God to stay up your dreams, to awaken them if they are sleeping, to resurrect them if they are dead. True dreams can be stolen, they can be killed and they can be silenced and dreams usually take time to come to pass from the time that you realize them. That's why many of us get lost. You have this dream since your childhood, that's why they used to asks us when we were growing up that what do you want to do when you grow up, what do you want to be when you grow up?. So because the dreams take time to manifest sometimes we end up just forgetting them, abandoning them but a lost of our dream are still there in our hearts, hidden somewhere. It's up to us to find them.
For example, it took Joseph 13 years before his dream to be a governor in Egypt came to pass. It also took king David 15 years to become the king even though he was anointed already. So your dreams are your destiny. It's so important that you find them. Pray about it, pray for them to be revealed to you. It's so sad at the end of life or at an older age when you hear people lamenting about what they should have become. You hear people saying I should have been this or I should have become that, that's a dream that was never realized. Fight to have you own Joseph dreams and the only one who can give those dreams is God.
And from the story of Joseph we can also pick up a few more lessons:
1. Don't expect everyone to support your dreams. Just like Joseph's brothers, it says they were angry with him, they hated him but they also envied him but they could not support him because they were jealous of him.
2. Do not share your dreams with everyone. Some are enemies who pretend to be brothers. Sometimes it's just better to keep your mouth shut. If you have this dream, this big vision, you want to start this company, you want to go to school to do this programme, this masters, you want to travel abroad. Keep your mouth shut. Just talk to God or tell a few people that you trust. Do not tell everybody.
3. Do not share your dreams with dream killers. People who have got this negative attitude, people who will never lift you up. People who will always discourage. I repeat, do not share you dream with dream killers.
4. This one is not in the passage the we read but it's something that is in the story of Joseph. It's in the few chapters that I read and it's about his story with Potiphar's wife and many of us know that part. Keep yourself holy, flee sexual immorality, flee sin. Many dreams have been killed or silenced on the altar of sin. Sex outside marriage kills many dreams that we can even imagine. Sin kills so many dreams, remain focused, remain in the right way, be a friend of God, so the right things.
If God has given you big dreams, if you have things that you have to accomplish stay close to God, stay in His presence and flee away from sin and just don't give up on your dreams. If God has put you here on Earth you have purpose, you have destiny, believe in yourself, believe in your abilities, you have abilities that no one else has. Believe it or not but every single human being has something that they can do that somebody else cannot do. Be revolted, be dissatisfied with your current situation. Do something about it, do not just lament about what you could have become. As long as you have life in you, your dreams can still come to pass. In the name of Jesus Christ.
Prayer:
Father, in the name of Jesus we want to thank you for yet another day, we want to thank you for yet another beautiful week. We surrender my God this whole week and this day in your holy hands. We ask you to help us realize our dreams, to reveal to us our dreams, reveal to us our destinies, our purposes, why we were created, why we are on this Earth. Many of us are just wondering around, not knowing the purpose of our creation but we come to you this morning and asking my God to help us and to let us know the purpose of our life, the purpose of our creation because each and every one has to leave a mark in this world. And we ask that all the abandoned dreams, all the abandoned projects in our life may come alive today, may be resurrected today. Touch each and every one of us and stay within us the desire to find our dream, to find our destiny and to find our purpose. I bless all my friends who are and ask you to be with them my God as they find their purpose, as they find their mission and as you use them to make a difference in this world my God. We bless your name, we glorify your name, we lift your name on high because only you are God. There is no God like you. In the name of the father, in the name of the son and in the name of holy spirit I pray. Amen
